Petrified Forest

Petrified Forest

This is our second trip to the Petrified Forest.  We wanted to come back and visit the areas we missed the first time.   We revisited some of our favorite spots and added the Painted Desert Inn and Painted Desert area.  It amazes both of us that these trees grew just north of the equator and due to continental drift, they ended up here along with all the land they grew on.  There are petrified trees everywhere and some are cracked into slices and lay just where they landed when they fell.  It looks like someone took a saw and cut them up neatly, but they have actually cracked naturally.  Neither of us got enough of looking at their different colors.

Painted Desert Inn

Painted Desert Inn is sited on a mesa top overlooking the vastness of the colorful Painted Desert. The building was constructed between 1937 and 1940 using portions of walls left over from an earlier lodge on the site that dated from the 'twenties.

The Painted Desert Inn is only open now to visitors who pass through.  No overnight stays.  They have kept the dining area and snack area much as it was when it was in its hay day.
